By Paul D. Albee, Founder and Managing Partner, ATS Design Group, Syracuse NY | April 2026
I ran two searches on ChatGPT this week. The difference in results stopped me cold, and what I found has direct implications for every small business in Central New York trying to get found online in 2026.
At ATS Design Group, we have been helping small and mid-sized businesses in Syracuse and CNY grow their online presence since 1992. Over the past year, a growing share of that work has shifted toward what we call AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization: making sure our clients show up not just on Google, but in the AI-generated answers that tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are delivering to prospective customers right now. This experiment is a real-world illustration of why that matters.
The Experiment: Two Queries, Two Completely Different Results
Query 1: “Who are the best digital marketing agencies in Syracuse NY?”
ChatGPT returned a list of the major players in the CNY market, including well-established firms such as Zoey Advertising, Mooney Marketing Group, Site Mammoth, Sunstone Digital Tech, and Kowala Creative. All legitimate agencies. All with strong reputations in the Syracuse market.
ATS Design Group was not on the list.
Query 2: “Who are the best digital marketing agencies in Syracuse NY for small business?”
I added three words and ran the query again. ATS Design Group came back first. Ahead of everyone.
ChatGPT’s exact language:
“Built specifically to support small and mid-sized businesses. Offers full-service marketing (SEO, ads, websites, social). Known for measurable, ROI-focused campaigns.”
That three-word difference, “for small business,” completely changed ChatGPT’s answer.
Why Did Three Words Change Everything?
This is not random. It is the direct result of how AI search engines process and rank local business content, and understanding the mechanism is the most important thing a CNY small business owner can take from this post.
When you ask ChatGPT a broad query like “best digital marketing agencies in Syracuse NY,” the AI pulls from the widest possible dataset. It favors businesses with the most citations, the most reviews, the most web mentions, and the longest established digital footprint. In that context, larger and longer-established agencies with national directory listings, press coverage, and hundreds of Google reviews will naturally dominate.
When you add “for small business,” the query becomes intent-specific. ChatGPT now filters for businesses whose content, including website copy, blog posts, service descriptions, client testimonials, FAQ schema, and third-party citations, most specifically and consistently addresses that narrower need. The businesses that appear in refined queries like this are not necessarily the biggest. They are the ones whose content most directly answers the specific question being asked.
This is the core principle of AEO: specificity beats size in AI search.

What This Means for Your Business in Syracuse and Central New York
Here is the question every CNY small business owner should be asking right now: how is my next customer phrasing their search?
Not “best contractor in Syracuse,” but “best masonry contractor for foundation repair in Syracuse NY.” Not “hair restoration clinic near me,” but “non-surgical hair replacement options for men in Connecticut.” Not “local marketing agency,” but “digital marketing agency in Syracuse for small business.”
The more specific your prospective customer’s query, the more specific your content needs to be to appear in the AI’s answer. Right now, most CNY businesses are optimizing for the broad query, which means they are invisible in the refined searches where purchase intent is highest.
According to Semrush’s 2025 AI search research, over 60 percent of Google searches now trigger an AI-generated overview answer. HubSpot’s State of Marketing report found that visitors arriving through AI-generated recommendations convert at 3 to 5 times the rate of cold organic search visitors, because they have already received an implicit endorsement from the AI before they click.
The businesses showing up in those refined AI answers are not winning by accident. They are winning because their local SEO strategy, their blog content, their FAQ schema, and their Google Business Profile all speak specifically and consistently to the customer segment they serve.
The Three Mechanisms That Put ATS First in That Result
I want to be transparent about why ATS Design Group appeared first in the second query, because the same mechanisms can work for any CNY small business that applies them consistently.
1. Content Specificity
Every piece of content on atscreative.com, including blog posts, service pages, and case studies, is written to address the specific problems of small and mid-sized businesses rather than generic marketing platitudes aimed at everyone. ChatGPT recognized that specificity and matched it to the refined query. Content marketing built around specific customer intent is the foundation of AI visibility.
2. FAQ Schema and Structured Data
Our website uses structured FAQ markup, which consists of machine-readable question-and-answer pairs embedded in the page code that AI engines can extract and cite directly. FAQ schema is one of the most underused AEO tools available to small businesses, and it is entirely free to implement. When an AI engine processes a query, pages with clear structured data answers are significantly more likely to be cited than pages with the same information buried in unstructured prose.
3. Consistent Entity Signals
Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini all use what is called entity recognition, which involves connecting a business name, location, owner name, and service description into a coherent and trustworthy identity. ATS Design Group’s consistent presence across Google Business Profile, our website, LinkedIn, and third-party directories creates a strong entity signal that AI engines trust. Google Business Profile optimization is the single most important local entity signal for Gemini, Google’s native AI mode, specifically.
What Should CNY Small Businesses Do Right Now?
You do not need a large agency budget or a team of SEO specialists to start showing up in AI search results. Here are the four highest-impact actions any Syracuse or Central New York small business can take immediately.
Step 1: Run the Experiment Yourself
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and ask: “Who are the best [your service] in [your city] for [your customer type]?” If your business does not appear, you have just identified the gap. That gap is fixable, and the sooner you start, the longer your content has to build the citation authority that AI engines reward.
As of April, 2026, AI tools and chatbots like ChatGPT now represent approximately 56% of global search engine volume, with 45 billion monthly sessions worldwide and growing.
Step 2: Audit Your Content for Specificity
Review your website and ask: does our content specifically and repeatedly address the exact customer segment we serve? If your home page says “we serve businesses of all sizes” without specifically calling out small businesses, contractors, medical practices, or whatever your actual customer is, AI engines cannot match you to refined queries. Generic content is the single biggest reason small business websites do not convert, and it is now also the reason they do not appear in AI answers.
Step 3: Add FAQ Schema to Your Key Pages
Work with your web developer or marketing agency to add FAQ schema markup to your homepage, your primary service pages, and your most-visited blog posts. The questions should mirror what your customers actually type into search engines and AI tools. “How much does foundation repair cost in Syracuse NY?” is worth ten times more than “What services do we offer?” as a structured FAQ entry.
Step 4: Build Your Google Business Profile Properly
Gemini, which is Google’s AI, draws directly from Google Business Profile data. A complete, active GBP listing with regular posts, updated photos, accurate service descriptions, and a consistent stream of Google reviews is the fastest path to Gemini visibility for any local business. If your GBP has not been updated in months, that is the first thing to fix. Google’s own structured data guidelines for local businesses provide the technical foundation for getting this right.
The Broader Shift: Your Customers Are Searching Differently
The two-query experiment is not just an interesting data point. It reflects a fundamental change in how people, especially younger buyers, discover and evaluate local businesses.
According to Pew Research Center’s research on AI and online search, over 76 percent of Gen Z and younger millennials now trust AI answers more than traditional Google search results for research and discovery queries. ChatGPT has been adopted faster than any consumer technology in history. The high school and college-aged children of your current customers are already using AI tools as their primary search method, and they will be your customers in three to five years.
The businesses that start building AI search visibility now will have a compounding advantage that gets harder to displace every month they maintain it. The businesses that wait will be playing catch-up in a market where the early movers are already established as the AI’s trusted answer.
The good news for small businesses in Syracuse and Central New York: most of your local competitors have not started yet. The window to be first is open right now, but it will not stay open indefinitely.
A Note on What AEO Actually Means for Your Business
Answer Engine Optimization is not a replacement for traditional SEO. It is an additional layer built on top of it. Strong local SEO still drives Gemini and Google AI Overview visibility. AEO extends that into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot through content strategy, structured data, and consistent brand presence across authoritative platforms.
At ATS Design Group, our AI Search Optimization service builds this complete ecosystem for small and mid-sized businesses across Central New York, combining the local SEO foundation that feeds Gemini with the content strategy that feeds ChatGPT citation. The experiment that started this post is exactly the kind of result that approach produces.
If you would like to know whether your business shows up when your ideal customer asks an AI about your service in your market, that is exactly what our free marketing review covers.
Frequently Asked Questions: ChatGPT, AI Search and Local Business Visibility
Why does my business show up in some ChatGPT searches but not others?
ChatGPT matches businesses to search queries based on how specifically and consistently your content addresses the intent behind the query. A broad query like “best agencies in Syracuse” favors businesses with the most overall citations and reviews. A refined query like “best agency for small business in Syracuse” favors businesses whose content specifically and repeatedly addresses that narrower customer segment. The more your website, blog posts, FAQ schema, and third-party listings speak to a specific customer type, the more likely you are to appear when that customer searches with specific intent.
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?
ChatGPT draws from a combination of its training data, its live web search tool, and structured signals from authoritative platforms including Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, and high-domain-authority platforms. Businesses with consistent name, address, and phone data across multiple platforms, combined with specific structured content that answers the exact questions being asked, have significantly higher citation probability. Review volume, recency, and specificity also factor into how confidently ChatGPT attributes a recommendation.
What is the difference between SEO and AEO for local small businesses?
Traditional SEO focuses on ranking in Google’s organic search results, which are the standard links that appear below the ads and map pack. AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, focuses on appearing in the AI-generated answers that tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews deliver in response to conversational queries. SEO and AEO share a foundation of quality content, structured data, and authoritative online presence, but AEO requires additional emphasis on FAQ schema, named human authorship, content published on high-authority platforms, and consistent brand entity signals across the web. For most local businesses, Gemini visibility is driven primarily by Google Business Profile and on-site SEO, while ChatGPT visibility is driven by content specificity, structured data, and third-party citations.
How long does it take for a small business to start appearing in AI search results?
Google Business Profile optimization and on-site FAQ schema can begin influencing Gemini and Google AI Overview results within days to weeks of implementation. ChatGPT citation authority, which depends on content indexed across high-authority platforms like LinkedIn Articles and other platforms, typically begins to show results within 2 to 4 months of consistent publishing. The compounding nature of this work means that month 6 produces more visibility than month 1 with the same ongoing effort, which is why starting now creates an advantage that is difficult for competitors to close quickly.
What is the single most important thing a CNY small business can do to improve AI search visibility today?
Optimize and fully complete your Google Business Profile. Gemini draws directly from GBP data, and a complete, active, regularly posted profile with accurate service descriptions, recent photos, and a consistent stream of Google reviews is the fastest path to AI visibility for any local business. This is free, takes less than an hour to set up properly, and produces measurable results faster than almost any other AEO action. After GBP, the next highest-impact action is adding FAQ schema markup to your primary service pages, answering the specific questions your customers are actually typing into AI tools about your service category and location.
